Patchwork Farm

Patchwork Farm

Copper Hill, Virginia

patchworkWe are in our fifth season of growing our farm, family and homestead as we tap into the rich tradition of agriculture in our area. Our commitment to growing food and caring for our patch of ground is based on diversity, health and sharing. Each season brings us closer to realizing our goal of providing fresh, delicious vegetables to our community year round. As we build season extension infrastructure and skills, our connection to the community strengthens too. We are constantly renewed by the thought of being a part of a larger movement of sustainable agriculture and cultural nourishment.

plentyOur goal is to provide healthy produce/food to children and adults who do not have access to it or cannot afford it. McCabe sells his pottery at the Blacksburg Farmers Market and at the end of the day gathers surplus produce from the vendors to take back to floyd (including soap, eggs, and bread on occasion) Plenty also provides market coupons to and has arranged with the department of aging to provide van service on saturday mornings to elderly women in floyd to get to the local floyd farmers market and to have one or two coupons (worth 2 bucks each) to spend on the produce. We also sell rain barrels, have a master gardener come speak at our community garden on a month basis. and more

Plenty! is the umbrella name for several food community redistribution projects that we are engaged in for Floyd County. we sponsor the empty bowls project that is a fundraiser for the backpack program of floyd elementary and high schools. our second project is healthy snacks for hungry kids where we place healthy snacks and juices for all kindergarten and first graders in all four elementary schools. our third project is Kid’s Wonder Garden, at Floyd Elementary School. This year kindergartens are planting and harvesting beans, potatoes, etc and have just planted beets, spinach, etc. our fourth project is the new Floyd Community Garden, located 1/2 mile north of the traffic light in floyd where we now have our studios for Wildfire Pots and the space for our final project Portable Produce where we glean and gather surplus organic produce from farmers and gardeners in floyd county and take bags out weekly to some 70 families and individuals- elderly, handicapped and single mothers who do not have transportation.

rom the light at floyd, go north on highway 8, about a half a mile, past the harvest moon, look to your right for the community garden and the little gray building and two red ones. from Blacksburg, Christiansburg, take highway 8 toward floyd, past wills ridge lumber, past the dollar store on the left, past citizens telephone on the right, then turn in at the next left.

Floyd Eco VillageAnswer: Floyd Eco Village is an intentional, multi-generational residential and educational community complex in Floyd, Virginia. Currently our small community garden feeds employees of the EcoVillage, but a larger garden and orchard are in the works and will eventually support a small community restaurant and kitchen. It is still under development, but we hope to open in the fall of 2012.
