Briar Mountain Farm

Briar Mountain Farm

We are a small family farm located in Rocky Mount, Virginia. Our farm is located in southwestern Virginia and with in short driving distance to North Carolina, Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Blacksburg. We are about 3 – 6 hours from West Virginia,Tennessee, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Maryland, and Ohio. We raise, sell, and breed registered Purebred Nubian Dairy Goats and AKC Registered Anatolian Shepherds. At Briar Mtn Farm we strive to produce goats that excel in milk production, have a wonderful disposition and also with good conformation to have the ability to compete and win in Dairy Goat Shows. 2012 has been a big year for us, we did really well in the 4 Dairy Goat Shows we attended and we were able to earn Permanent Championships for CH Menagerieacrz Blu’s Big Galoot and CH Kismet Kameo’s Xclusive Koffee, we are so proud of our goats and how they did for us this year. Also this year we freshened two of Kismet Operator’s In Scharge’s daughters and we couldn’t be more pleased with how he is working in our herd. We also had another another very exciting first freshener this year and she is a full sister to Charger, Kismet Smooth Operator’s Sky. We added a new Senior Herd sire to our breeding program thanks to Holly Buroker of Hoanbu Dairy Goats for allowing +*B GCH Kastdemur’s Free and Easy to join our herd. We also purhased 2 new additions from Kastdemur’s Dairy Goats in California, a new Junior Herd sire Kastdemur’s Always Remember Me ( Kastdemur’s Time In A Bottle x GCH Kastdemur’s Always and Forever ) and a new doeling Kastdemur’s PB Enduring Legacy ( J&R Spirit’s Dakota Playboy x SGCH Kastdemur’s Mandalay Bay ). As always we would like to thank Jean Lucas of Kismet Nubians for her continued support and encouragement as we take our journey with our Nubians. We also make and sell goat’s milk soap and lotion and organic lip balm. Several years ago we expanded our product line to include bath fizzies and gift baskets for all occassions. We are members of the American Dairy Goat Association. If you have any questions or would like to get in contact with us, please email us at or by phone at 540-263-0658. The Swinging Bridge Restaurant

The Swinging Bridge Restaurant

After a long and arduous journey, we are proud to welcome you to The Swinging Bridge Restaurant, where you’ll find “old-time, Southern, stick-to-your-ribs good cookin’ with a hillbilly gourmet flare.” We offer a unique dining experience in a cozy setting, with décor that reflects the beauty and splendor of nature, brought indoors. Sit down, relax, and have something good to eat!

Warning – be prepared to “Slap your Mama ’cause she don’t cook like this no more”…that’s how strongly we feel (and we think you’ll agree) about our country-style, homemade meals. [Menu]

Reservations for 8 or more can be made by calling ahead — 540-897-5099. Larger parties: certain restrictions apply, call for information.

Our menu features a variety of buffalo dishes. We now offer BBQ from Thursday through Sunday, prepared on our “locomotive smoker”.

Most Thursday nights – come on over, cozy up to the fire and listen to some great bluegrass music, played by local musicians. After your meal, go upstairs and stroll across our real swinging bridge and check out our wildlife display and visit the Paint Bank General Store & Gift Shop.

River and Rail

river and railThe River and Rail

The River and Rail was born in 2012 from a shared passion for food and community.

Through our food we strive to feature and present the best of Appalachian, Southern traditions and cuisine. Chef Deal and his team use locally sourced vegetables, meats and cheeses to  capitalize on seasonal flavors and local food producers. All of this in a recently transformed Roanoke landmark, the former Lipes Pharmacy.

Chef Deal weekly creates our lunch, dinner and brunch menus to highlight what is in season and at the peak of freshness.  Chef Deal, though a young James Beard semi-finalist, has been The River and Rail’s Executive Chef since the restaurant’s beginning.

He enthusiastically develops his menu around the superb ingredients found in the region: fish, bison, goat, duck, pork, quality Virginia aged meats, produce, wines, and other regional goods. He envisions The River and Rail as a space where the guests from Western Virginia and beyond will come to have an appreciation of the food, where it comes from, and who makes it.
