Riven Rock Farm

Riven Rock Farm is located in beautiful Highland County, Virginia.  We strive to offer a place where the wild meets agriculture, a place where healthy ecosystems and biodiversity are priorities over monocultures and dollars.

Our mission at Riven Rock Farm is to develop and nurture a holistic, sustainable mountain farm- and to share our products, services and experiences with like-minded people.

We raise purebred, heritage breed, Galloway beef cattle (Belted and Solid colors), Katahdin Hair Sheep, and free range laying hens.  Our heritage breed Galloway beef and Katahdin lamb are delicious, healthy and 100% Grass Fed products.

belted galloways

Riven Rock is comprised of 600 acres of hardwood forests, mountain meadows, and high sweeping pastures. The

old celtic word “Riven” means- to split or shatter- and we certainly have our share of split rock formations, cliffs and caves here in our forests and ridges.

Located at close to 3,000 feet in elevation, our summer temperatures are a refreshing change from the “lowlands”. Come visit us and refresh your spirit.  Enjoy the farm and the surrounding highlands of Virginia.

Puffenbargers Sugar Orchard

Owned and operated by Ivan and Sis Puffenbarger. Three generations later, our family

puffenbarger sugar orgard

carries on its sugar-making heritage by bottling pure Virginia maple syrup from the same sugarbush our grandfather tapped for so many years. We extend an invitation to visit our sugar camp during the Highland County Maple Festival the 2nd and 3rd week-ends in March. Weather permitting, you can see the processing of “sugar water” or “sap” by using a vaccum gathering system, a reverse osmosis machine, and an oil-fired evaporator. Depending on the sugar content, it usually takes about 50 gallons or more of sap to make one gallon of syrup. Ideal condtions for making syrup are a combination of nighttime temperatures in the 20′s and daytime temperatures beween 40 and 50 degrees. The syrup and sugar season ends by the the last week in March. We usually have syrup year around and will ship in plastic conatiners to any point.

Months of Operation: 2nd and 3rd Week-end in March during the Highland County Maple Festival. We sell our maple syrup year round, when available!

Firefly Fare

firfly fare

From their website…..

“Think of Firefly Fare as “farm to table on the go.” Chef and owner Chris Parkhurst offers a seasonally changing menu, a fresh juice bar, and freshly baked deserts.

“We’re trying to bring us back a little closer to how our great grandparents used to eat, but with a bit of modern sensibility and global influence,” says Parkhust. That means sourcing locally and sustainably when possible and creating a changing landscape of great tastes. “We’re providing an alternative that’s been missing downtown for someone who wants quick access to healthy, tasty food while supporting local farmers.”

Sound good?  It sounds even better when you list some of the options that have made the menu so far: butternut squash pancakes with local apple butter, zucchini frittata with braised greens and fresh oranges, and Moroccan seven veggie stew.
The dishes change frequently, so the best way to find out what the Blacksburg native has cooking is to stop by. You’ll be welcomed with carefully crafted meals, fresh ingredients, and fun details, including firefly table lights and some of your favorite old record covers holding today’s menu.
